BIOGRAPHY
Urban Gypsies are a fiery instrumental guitar band. We play original Jazz Latin and Contemporary music with an edge. Mixed with world music influences, jazz, funk, and flamenco, our music represents an exciting new direction in Latin fusion. Influences include John McLaughlin, Ottmar Liebert, Paco de Lucia, Sylvain Luc and many other guitar greats.
The five piece comprise of two guitars, bass drums and cello.
Urban Gypsies have been performing for 9 years and played at numerous festivals and clubs nationally. We have held residencies and concerts in exclusive Sydney venues including Cargo Bar, The Basement, Watershed Hotel in Darling Harbour, Cafe Sydney, Side on Cafe, and Hemmesphere. We have supported the Buena Vista Social Club, Cassandra Wilson, and Kristina Olsen, who features on our latest album. Urban Gypsies have also released 3 original albums to date: Gypsy Fever (2000), Sauvage (2003) and the newly released Beautiful Catastrophe (2008). The band headlined at exclusive Sydney venues, the Vanguard in May 2009 and the Basement in October 2009 to Launch their new CD Beautiful Catastrophe.
